“Yusuke Hanai has been one of Japan’s most in-demand artists for several years now,” writes Alex Weinstein. “His street-influenced, illustrative work has been a mainstay of hip branding in the country for a decade, helping raise the aesthetic profile of many of his corporate clients. His drawing style is hard to dislike, as he borrows freely from the aesthetics of 1960s Californian beatnik cartoons.”
In the short above, Weinstein talks with Hanai about the power of art, the characters in his work, and his process. Read TSJ 33.4’s “A Friend to Face the Current: The humanism and impending destiny of Yusuke Hanai’s not-lost souls,” by Alex Weinstein, for the artist’s full profile. Pick up a copy here.
