From 1964 to 1971, Charlie Galanto left an indelible impression with his performances in massive waves at Waimea and Sunset. Then he disappeared from surfing permanently. Today, Mark Fragale finds Galanto afloat on his plush catamaran, not too far from the North Shore, still enjoying a life by the sea—sans big waves.
