Despite not being a surfer, mid-century mainstream photographer Leigh Wiener coaxed poetry from the sport’s golden years. In TSJ 31.2’s “Stranger in a Strange Sea,” author Jon Cohen and Wiener’s son, Devik, comb through the late photographer’s archive of more than 400,000 images. Among the candid photos of presidents, stars, ballers, and musicians are moments when surfing crossed Wiener’s lens. For more of Wiener’s work, pick up a copy of our new issue today.
